Challenge
For my bachelor graduation project, I did a project in collaboration with Braun to explore new design opportunities. For this project Braun encouraged everyone to go 'beyond design' and to go beyond what Braun is currently known for. They had a few topics in mind, one of which was ‘reducing food waste’. This is the topic that I decided to focus on for this project.
Approach
For this project, I used the Vision in Product Design Method (ViP) which is a context-driven and interaction-focussed approach. This approach first explores the current context and interaction to define a design direction. Once the design direction has been formed, a future interaction is imagined to find innovative solutions for the future context.
The domain I started with was: “food waste in 2030”
Impact
Braun Fragrance is a concept store that allows customers to create their own personalized perfume made out of the essential oils that are extracted from repurposed fruit peels.
It’s only waste if you waste it

What foods are thrown away?
I conducted research on food habits to understand what types of food were being discarded and why. Participants were asked to take pictures of all the food they threw away over the course of a week. This research revealed that fruit peels and seeds were consistently among the items discarded.
From playground to plate
Based on the ViP method, I used an analogy to inspire me during in the ideation phase.: “I want people to feel unrestricted in their food experience while being part of a collective effort of reducing food waste. “
For the feeling of ‘unrestrictedness’, I selected the analogy of playing at a playground with the interaction qualities: expressive, explorative, imaginative, confronting
From trash to treasure: Ideation & conceptualisation
At first, it might sound disgusting. But in my food habit research, I found that fruit peels are very frequently wasted. I also discovered fruit peels contain oil sacs with essential oils. These oils have a very strong concentration of the scent of the fruit/plant that they come from. By combining these essential oils with a carrier oil, the scent of different fruit peels can be combined to create perfume.
