Internship at Relate
Relate: The offline social app
Team: Sarah van Coevorden | Dennis Sanders | Iris Schout | Jette van Beek
Company: Relate
Year: 2020-2021
Concept
Relate is an offline social app, designed to connect people in real life. and make lasting friendships. See how you relate through your shared interests. Connect to people by joining meetups of fun activities and build meaningful connections.
Impact
Meaningful connections are the biggest driver of human happiness. We talked to students all over the Netherlands and found that 95% want to get to know new people. Especially, in their first years students struggle making meaningful connections in new cities. Relate helps them to connect.
Role
Initially hired as the Launch and Strategy Growth Manager, I soon saw that the app required significant enhancements before launch. Consequently, I took on responsibilities in UX/UI design and branding for the Relate app. Working closely with an experienced external UX/UI designer provided valuable learning experiences. In the dynamic startup environment, I was able to adapt my role to what was needed.
Meet Relate
How it works: Push the button to start a meetup or join someone else's. You'll be able to see which interests you share and how you relate to each other. Add interests to your profile in the form of cards, and see how you connect with others by looking at the cards you have in common.
All-round creative
In addition to my involvement in the UX/UI design of Relate, I also took on responsibilities for content creation. This included organizing and coordinating photoshoots, graphic design, editing photos and videos to ensure they aligned with our brand's aesthetic, and managing our social media platforms. My role required a combination of creativity and strategic planning to effectively engage our audience and promote the app.
Ready for launch
Launching a social meetup app during Covid was quite challenging. However, the ongoing lockdowns and frequent quarantines made students even more eager to connect. We secured partnerships with several student associations, including UVSV, Alcmeon, and USC. The app launched shortly after my internship ended and enjoyed a few months of success. Unfortunately, Relate is no longer active at this time.
