TimeSquare Redesign: The ultimate festival app

Challenge
TimeSquare is a platform app that allows festival organizers to create their festival app within the app to provide visitors with any information needed. For this project, my team and I were asked to improve TimeSquares usability and user experience, while also exploring new design opportunities for future iterations. Throughout the project it was important to consider the adaptability of the designs to a variety of different festivals.
Approach
Our approach consisted of two phases; Evaluation & Conceptualisation and Prototyping & User testing. The first phase was used to analyze TimeSquare’s current usability and user experience. These insights were used in the second phase to ideate, prototype and test redesigns. The process consisted of redesigning the functional hierarchy, information architecture, interaction flows and visual UI design.
Impact
Previously, the interaction between the lineup, timetable, and map is too complicated for the target group. The team wanted festival visitors to feel supported, confident, and excited. Our goal was for the app to be the ultimate festival buddy—attentive, flexible, and proactive.
User tests with the final redesign received positive feedback from the target audience. The design was also well received by the TimeSquare team, who implemented certain aspects of the proposed designs.
Artist page as transition hub
For user to easily move between lineup, timetable and map, we designed the artist page as a transition hub. The artist page summarizes all the information of the artist, location and time of their performance, linking it perfectly to the information on the other pages. Therefore this page is transformed into a layover page to easily switch to timetable and map for more detailed information.
Home page as festival entrance
Since TimeSquare is a festival platform app, we redesigned the app-in-app home page as a festival entrance to allow users to fully emerge in that specific festival vibe before diving into the other functionalities. After this transition the user does not necessarily have to go back to the homepage to fulfill the main actions of the user flow and therefore the homepage will be collapsed at the top of the page. This way it is still accessible but not distracting from relevant functionalities.
Personalisability through ‘My festival’
The new functionality ‘My festival’ will be added. Here, users are able to plan their own festival by selecting the artist that they like and highlighting them on their personal map and timetable. This way users will not be overwhelmed by the amount of information once they are at the festival and will be able to fully enjoy their day. Additionally, the app will take on the role of the ultimate festival buddy.
